A few days ago I stumbled on this old recording that I never did anything with. This track really demonstrates the potential and magic that the Yogi Tea Cafe is capable of. It's really awesome to see a whole group of musicians and vocalists do something together totally impromptu and unrehearsed. This is a recording of Snatam at YTC in 2005 accompanied by Guru Ganesha Singh, a bunch of other singers, and some drummers that you can't hear to well because they weren't miked. I've been thinking about initiating some kind of Gospel project and this track is a great inspiration. It does a small jump at the beginning because I recorded this with my old laptop that had issues with Pro-Tools. It caused me to miss a few seconds of the song. I creatively tried to cover it up, but it still sounds weird.

I actually just joined a gospel choir myself, it's time for some Khalsa Gospel!
I loooooooove the Idea of more Gospel experimentation, the form of singing in Choir too is so humbling and can really work the power of well done harmonies...imagine Mul Mantra Gospel style!

I do deeply understand from where you are coming and I think its a great idea. But in Sikh religion we do not take melodies from a cultural songs, movies etc and incorparate with Gurbani...
When we do this the spiritual aspect is lost and we will not get full benefits by mediating on it, because always our mind wants to attach to Maya and it will find ways to do it. By mixing it our mind would be more focused on music that is derived from cultural, movies, or songs.
I hope you would understand what I mean.
However, if the music also resonates the Gurbani, such as mul mantra or other shabads then nothing could be purer. Then it does not matter if the intrument is sitar or guitar, tabla or a drum.
I was wondering if Gurbani could be made to resonate in only pure musical form, such as like Yanni's music. Where the music itself takes an individual to next level. I think it would be very powerful music if the music is based on Gurbani.

Where do you draw the line between what kind of tunes are appropriate for Gurbani? All the Shabds in the Siri Guru Granth were written in Raag, but very few Ragis play the shabds in melodic patterns that they were intended. Now adays they typically make up their own tunes, often influenced by pop music. If the musical style is uplifting and carries the word of the Guru then I see it as a very succesfull vehicle.
Many westerners find it hard to relate to some of the classical Indian styles, and incorporating music that they understand is a good way to teach them the Shabd Guru. For years now, Western Sikhs have been incorporating Western musical styles into Gurbani and mantra compostions and they are very uplifting. And since Sikhism is based on the pricinples of religous tolerence and inclusion (there are many Hindu and Muslim writings in the Siri Guru Granth), I thought it would be cool to experimant with the Shabd Guru and powerful musical styles of other faiths, Gospel being one of my favorites.
I do understand where you are coming from, music in any form can be maya if we become attached to it in limited way, but if we attach ourselves to the word of the Guru and use music as a vehicle for that, than I see it as a powerful tool, whatever form it takes.
